YUCATAN MEXICO NOVEMBER 2010

Two weeks this November at the Riu Lupita Playercar, not the best time of year to go really, its there winter so most of the Mexican stuff has moved out and most of the Yank woodwarblers have passed through, we saw around 125 species but it was hard work, the Golf course is a great place with several ponds but we got chucked off it most mornings so probably missed loads of stuff as we had over 100 species here alone. We also birded the Mayan ruins around Coba, Tulum and Chichen Itza, but the mass of people and the surrounding woodlands being fenced off caused us problems, we also had 4 hours in Jardin Botanico which only added a poor four new birds.

CHICHEN ITZA

World Heritage site
Trouble is its now like a market with hundreds of mexicans selling tack along every track, and making as much noise as possible, sites like Coba though smaller are far better for walking around and you can climb the Pyramid in Coba 200 odd steps to the top.

MORELETS CROCODILE

This one comes right up to the waters edge for the tourists, a wrinkled old guy has a long stick with a chunk of raw meat which he dangles over that great big Gob, awesome to watch as it lifts itself out of the water. Coba, Yucatan Mexico

WHITE NOSED COATIMUNDI

Troop 40 strong in out hotel grounds, they went on raids around the swimming pool, great to watch the women sceam and climb on the sun loungers. The Yucatan Mexico Nov 2010

BLACK IGUANA

Quite a few on Golf Course, but hundreds in the open areas of the ruins, the Juvs are bright Green.
